Hey all,
I’m excited to share that the pre‑launch page for our first-ever graphic novel, Cimarron, is now live on Kickstarter.
Illustrated by Shuning Ji and written by Sophie McVeigh and Dwayne Fields, the story follows a six-year-old boy torn from his grandmother’s rainforest home in Jamaica and dropped into the grey edges of North London—a displacement that sets him on a lifelong journey to reclaim the sense of freedom once claimed by Jamaica’s eighteenth-century “cimarrones.”

What is Cimarron?
From the rainforests of Jamaica to the ends of the Earth: one boy’s journey to become a hero.
Cimarron is a new graphic novel inspired by the powerful true story of adventurer and environmental advocate Dwayne Fields FRGS.
The title comes from the Spanish word “cimarrón”, meaning “wild” or “untamed”—once used to describe people who escaped oppression to live freely. That spirit runs through the entire book.
As a child, Dwayne is taken from the warmth of rural Jamaica and dropped into the stark, often brutal reality of North London—forced to hide the very qualities that make him who he is. Years later, a violent encounter reignites his drive for freedom. Pushed to the edge, he sets out on a series of expeditions—across deserts, over ice fields, through extreme landscapes—searching not for fame, but for the courage to simply be himself.

Illustrator Shuning Ji captures this emotional journey in a shifting palette of rainforest greens and polar blues, while writer Sophie McVeigh and Dwayne himself bring the story to life reminding us that sometimes the greatest adventure is finding your way back to who you really are.

New digs. We’ve traded Finsbury Park for co‑working at The Exchange, Somerset House. If you’re nearby, in central London drop me a line and swing by for a coffee.
Back to school. I’m knee‑deep in a Southeast Asian art course so ask me about batik textiles, Burmese lacquerware, or anything ASEAN art and art history related. I could use the practice explaining it!
Thanks, everyone.
